Welcome to Screen Dive and thank you for choosing to spend your time here.
We hope you have a magical and surprising dive, and that you enjoy breathing in all the new universes we have collected here.
Screen Dive was born out of necessity. When it became clear that the usual format of live performances at Gaudeamus Festival can only happen in a limited way, and that a large part of the audience could not reach the festival, the need arose for an alternative platform.
A platform that manifests Gaudeamuse’s objectives to stimulate and support musical innovation, even more in these times; giving stage to local and international musicians to share their creation and allow audiences all around the world to participate and enjoy adventurous sound exploration.
And this is how Screen Dive, an online sound playground, was born.
You’re kindly invited to explore 20 works by 25 artists from all around the world, who to a large extent and even if not intentionally, refer to and represent the here-and-now. By being created out of and into a world where social isolation is somewhat forced. Defined also by the medium itself and the way it is being consumed. Staying within the walls of one’s home sets the tone for a different kind of making and creating, as you might experience yourself here on Screen Dive.
Yet we deliberately chose not to title Screen Dive with an overarching theme, out of a desire to give a stage and a free hand to many types of artistic, personal and social statements. And indeed a colorful range of ideas emerged: Intimate sharing next to Political and social criticism, Computer next to Vocal interaction, Virtual performances and online Operas, abstract themes of Exploring space, Shapes and Taking time, Folk tales, Electronic music, Free improvisation, multi-sensorial experiences and more.
If you’d like, you can explore this web of connectivity between Screen Dive pieces in the map here:
Why so many works?
we chose to curate many works instead of few places because of the necessity and possibilities created by the lockdown.
Another principle underlying Screen Dive is interactivity in its various shades. You will find low next to high fi interaction, 3D and VR works next to graphic and audio scores, sing-along videos, musical games, feedback machines and sound generators, and many creative forms of interactivity inviting you to take part. On Screen Dive playground there’s a toy and game for everyone! With enough curiosity and by taking time, you will find your kind of jam. We recommend taking the time and diving calmly inside, as if the outside world on earth ceases to exist for some time.
Keeping an open mind, You will discover unique sound worlds, connecting you to individuals and communities in other places and time.
Along with participating as an audience in live performances, which are of great value, we believe that active participation, in play and interaction, brings a special experience. We’re excited to share this platform with you and see it as a great opportunity for all of us to explore another side of Gaudeamus uncompromising ambition to discover, support and bring to the audience new music.
We would love to hear from you about your experience!
We would like to thank all the great musicians and artists for their creative work:
